Job Summary

The Youth Program Specialist supports the implementation of various activities and programs designed for children and youth during out-of-school time, including after-school and summer periods. Working under the supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator or similar leadership, the Youth Program Specialist assists in organizing and facilitating age-appropriate activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of participants, and maintaining a positive and inclusive atmosphere conducive to learning and growth.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in the planning and preparation of educational, recreational, and enrichment activities for children and youth, including games, arts and crafts, sports, and field trips.
  • Engage with program participants in a positive and supportive manner, fostering meaningful relationships and promoting a sense of belonging and community.
  • Supervise children and youth during program activities, ensuring their safety, well-being, and adherence to established rules and guidelines.
  • Assist in the setup and cleanup of program spaces, ensuring that materials and equipment are properly organized and maintained.
  • Provide academic support and assistance with homework and educational projects as needed, under the direction of program staff.
  • Serve as a positive role model for program participants, always demonstrating respect.
  • Collaborate with program staff and volunteers to assess participant needs, interests, and progress, and contribute ideas for program improvement and development.
  • Assist with administrative tasks as assigned, including record-keeping, data entry, and communication with parents/caregivers.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education, child development, or a related field preferred. Previous experience working with children and youth in a recreational, educational, or childcare setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of positive reinforcement techniques, conflict resolution and de-escalation
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate activities and enjoy working with all age groups.
  • Knowledge of Outlook, internet applications, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint applications.
  • Knowledge of a basic understanding of educational concepts to aid with homework and enrichment activities
  • Skilled in written and verbal communication 
  • Skilled in problem-solving to access issues and implement solutions during program activities
  • Ability to interact effectively with members, guests, and staff of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and education levels.
  • Ability to develop and implement engaging activities, based on the youth’s age, that stimulate curiosity, creativity and learning.
  • Ability to be an excellent team player with the ability to work hands-on in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with members, guests, clients, and employees.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position involves various physical movements, including lifting, standing, bending, and other actions necessary to support children in both indoor and outdoor games and activities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbent works in both in indoor/outdoor setting, busy and noisy environment. Some varied weather conditions are expected with exposure to heat/humidity, or cool/cold weather. Varying schedule to include evenings, holidays, and extended hours as business dictates.
